Description

The toxoplasmosis infection usually occurs through contaminated feed or water. The transmission of this protozoan can also occur in the uterus. Cats can transmit the parasite through their feces, contaminating the feed and infecting swine.

 

Symptoms

Symptoms are usually sub clinical.

Sows

  • Abortion.
  • Overall reproductive failure.
  • Stillbirths.

Swine infected in utero

  • Diarrhea.
  • Lack of coordination.
  • Seizures.
  • Weakened animals with difficulty in movement.
  • Cough.

 

Causes / Contributing Factors

  • Cats living with pigs.

 

Diagnosis

  • Serological tests and histological analysis of tissues.

 

Control / Prevention

  • There is no treatment.
  • Do not let cats near pigs.
