CHAPTER 1 – BASF TIPS FOR RODENT CONTROL

BASF tip No. 1: Have the first phase for rodent control in mind

Every rodent control plan should have three phases: prevention, the application of chemical-free solutions, and the use of rodenticide baits.

In this BASF tip we will discuss the first phase, which is essential to prevent rodents from entering the farm and to reduce the economic losses they cause.

To prevent rodents from entering the farm, an integrated pest management program should be implemented, which will focus on the following aspects:

• Monitoring farm surroundings: this should be done continuously and frequently. It is very important to take care of the surroundings to prevent the proliferation of rodents. But it should also be monitored to detect any rodent activity
• Monitor the inside of the farm: the environment must be kept in good condition to prevent and reduce rodent activity. To detect the presence of rodents, we should:
  • Look for marks produced by the rodents’ two pairs of incisors.
  • Detect their movement from tracks in dust or sand.
  • Detect the presence of nests near water sources.
• Have a good level of knowledge: knowing the potential or activity level of rats or mice is essential for effective control. In addition, all farm workers must be trained and made aware.
•  Respect for the environment: strictly comply with product labels to reduce environmental impact. The use of bait holders is mandatory both inside and around the barns.
• Records: have complete record keeping documents
