Patrick Charles Henri Morel

Career to date
Dr Morel started his career as a geneticist at the Swiss National Pig Centre, where he set up a selection index that included intramuscular fat, coinciding with traditional traits such as growth rate, feed conversion efficiency, lean percentage, and meat quality.  He later moved to New Zealand in the early nineties to conduct research on how IGF-1 modulates maternal constraint before taking a position at Massey University as a pig scientist. His research has focused on feed evaluation and how nutrient intake influences growth and pork quality. Over the years, he has been involved in the development of a new generation pig growth model. Recently, this model has been combined with linear programming and non-linear optimisation mathematics, allowing model users to find optimal feeding strategies for growing pigs.
