Thomas Blaha

Prof. Dr. Thomas Blaha graduated in 1971 in veterinary medicine from the University of Leipzig (East Germany). He worked as junior scientist from 1971 to 1974 at the Research Institute for Animal Hygiene in Eberswalde, was from 1974 to 1980 a member of a mixed veterinary group practice in East Germany, and worked as department chair at the Research Institute for Bacterial Animal Diseases in Jena from 1980 to 1991, specializing in bacteriology and the epidemiology of infectious animal diseases.

In 1991, he became a Full Professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine of Hannover (today: University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation) and Head of the Field Station for Epidemiology of the Hannover School of Veterinary Medicine.

From 1996 to 2001, Prof. Blaha was the first holder of the renowned “Endowed Allen D. Leman Chair” at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Minnesota. In 2001, he resumed his position as Professor of Epidemiology and Head of the Field Station for Epidemiology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation. In 2002, he became Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Public Health (ECVPH), and in 2004 Diplomate of European College of Porcine Health Management (ECPHM). 

He has published more than 250 scientific papers in the areas of animal health management, pre-harvest food safety, zoonoses research, antimicrobial resistance and animal welfare of food animals. Since 2007, Prof. Blaha has been the chairman of the German Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT).
